Researchers at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology have developed an innovative artificial intelligence model to study the behavior of splashing drops of different liquids. Led by Professors Yoshiyuki Tagawa and Akinori Yamanaka, the team used a feedforward neural network to classify videos of splashing and non-splashing drops with high accuracy. The AI model was able to successfully classify low-viscosity liquids with a success rate of 92 percent and high-viscosity liquids with a 100 percent success rate. Team members Jingzu Yee, Shunsuke Kumagai, Daichi Igarashi, and Pradipto contributed to the development of the explainable AI method, which provides insights into the decision-making process of the model. This technology has potential applications in various fields, including printing and paint quality control, erosion prevention, and airborne virus propagation reduction. The research was published in Flow and marks a significant step forward in understanding the complex phenomenon of splashing drops.
