India has taken a significant leap forward in weather forecasting and climate research with the inauguration of two supercomputers at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) in Noida. The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated these systems, which were designed and delivered by Eviden, a business leader in advanced computing and part of the Atos Group.
The two supercomputers, named ARKA and Arunika, boast a combined power of up to 21.91 Petaflops and utilize Eviden's patented Direct Liquid Cooling technology for efficient cooling. The systems were created in partnership with AMD, Nvidia, and DDN, and feature dedicated storage capacities of 33 Petabytes and 24 Petabytes respectively.
Emmanuel Le Roux, Head of Big Data and Security at Eviden, expressed pride in working with the Ministry of Earth Sciences institutions to provide best-in-class technologies for critical projects. Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted the importance of accurate weather forecasting and the need for high-performance computing solutions like those provided by Eviden.
