A recent study analyzing nearly 34,000 comments on Reddit has found that the tech community is more strongly divided than the general public when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI). Researchers from the University of Rochester, led by Professor Jiebo Luo, used natural language processing techniques to examine comments in 388 unique subreddits following the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The study revealed that while non-tech communities tend to view AI as a positive force for societal improvement, the tech community is more polarized, with opinions ranging from strongly positive to strongly negative.
Key figures such as Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer of deep learning, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, have expressed differing views on AI. The study highlights concerns about job replacement, ethical implications, and regulation, as well as the potential benefits of AI, including improved productivity and open-source culture. The researchers call for policymakers, developers, educators, and researchers to develop clear explanations of AI technologies and their applications to address common misconceptions and fears.
